Cartooning – Comic Strips

Students will create a plan for a cartoon by choosing a plot, characters, and create a basic story line. With guidance we will complete a full cartoon strip or short story. We will learn basic drawing skills,
discuss layout, and learn color theory. We will look at our favorite comic strips and our not so favorite to help us create the perfect cartoon!

MONDAYS

4:00-5:45 pm, Kindergarten – 3rd grade
5:45-7:30 pm, 4th – 6th grade

Week 1
Into to class and materials. Look at some popular comic strips and learn about a few comic artists. Begin concept/Brainstorm for your own comic strip.

Week 2
Develop comic ideas and character development

Week 3
Discuss layout and intro to color theory. Discuss well-known comics and comic artists of students interest

Week 4
Begin rough draft of comic. Layout, drawing techniques, and language use

Week 5
Finish rough draft. Make final adjustments Week 6 Begin final comic strip! Layout and pencil work

Week 6
Begin final comic strip! Layout and pencil work

Week 7
Finish pencil work. Begin marker outlines. Finish marker outlines. Begin color work. Discuss color theory

Week 8
Complete any unfinished work. Look at each other’s work and have an intro to critique where we share all our favorite things about our work!

Painting

Begin with sketching a drawing from a chosen provided photo. We will discuss color theory and art history based on student interests. Drawing will be completed with acrylic paint when sketch is completed. We will begin with a landscape, animal portrait, and then a still life. Students projects will become more tailored to their interest as class moves forward. After starting with acrylic paint we will move to watercolor.

TUESDAYS

4:00-5:45 pm, Kindergarten – 3rd grade
5:45-7:30 pm, 4th – 6th grade
$200 / 1.5 hours per week

Week 1
Choose from a group of provided pictures. We will begin learning how to sketch out our work.

Week 2
Discuss drawing techniques and a few landscape artists. Begin painting

Week 3
Discuss painting techniques and complete painting

Week 4
Begin second piece, choose an animal from provided pictures. Begin sketching

Week 5
Discuss drawing techniques and a few artists. Begin painting

Week 6
Discuss painting techniques and complete painting

Week 7
Begin third piece. Begin sketch from given still life.

Week 8
Last class. Complete final painting. Look at each other’s work and have an intro to critique where we share all our favorite things about our work!

Drawing

We will begin with pencil and sketching a chosen provided photo. We will learn drawing skills and art history based on student interests. Our first project will be completed using colored pencil and then move on to using markers. Students projects will become more tailored to their interest as class moves forward. We will be drawing in several different styles during this class.

THURSDAYS

4:00-5:45 pm, Kindergarten – 3rd grade
5:45-7:30 pm, 4th – 6th grade

Week 1
Students will choose from provided images of an animal to complete our first drawing. Begin sketch and discuss drawing techniques

Week 2
Discuss artists and color theory. Begin colored pencil work.

Week 3
Complete drawing

Week 4
Begin brainstorming to create a cartoon character of your own. Discuss cartoon artists and character design.

Week 5
Discuss color theory and begin outline marker work.

Week 6
Complete marker work

Week 7
Choose a landscape from provided images. Begin sketch, discuss drawing techniques and landscape artists. Work in colored pencil

Week 8
Last class. Complete final work. Look at each other’s work and have an intro to critique where we share all our favorite things about our work! Discuss artist related to student work, color theory, and drawing techniques.

Mixed Media/3D Arts

A large mix of media will be used to create work based on student’s interests. We will begin with creating our own handmade paper for printing. Students will learn about monoprinting techniques and discuss art history based on project and student interests.

FRIDAYS

Kindergarten – 3rd grade, 4:00-5:45 pm
Paper mache, air dry clay, papermaking, printmaking. We will create work using air dry clay to and create our own string art to finish the session.
4th – 6th grade, 5:45-7:30 pm
Air dry clay, papermaking, printmaking, linocut
$200 / 1.5 hours per week

Week 1
Intro to papermaking process. Create papermaking screen. Learn about the tools, techniques, and process. Create our first piece of handmade paper.

Week 2
Create a second round of handmade paper. This time we will incorporate materials of students choosing (glitter, plants, other found materials)

Week 3
Begin discussing the monoprinting process. We will use pieces from nature (leafs/flowers) to create our own nature themed prints.

Week 4
We will use found materials to create abstract monoprints. Discuss composition, color theory, and artists.

Week 5
4:00 class: Begin paper mache food. 5:45 class: Intro to the linocut printmaking processes.

Week 6
4:00 class: Complete structure if needed and begin gluing process. 5:45 class: Complete carving linocut block. Discuss artists and cutting techniques.

Week 7
4:00 class: Discuss painting techniques and color and complete painting. 5:45 class: Print on our handmade paper. Discuss color theory and printing process.

Week 8
Last class! Have fun today creating a one of a kind Chihuly inspired sculpture
